Ice caves on the Baikal Lake
Baikal Lake in Russia holds 1/5 of the world’s freshwater, and 80 % Russia’s freshwater. It is the deepest lake in the world, with 1680 meter on the deepest part. The shoreline is 2700-kilometre-long and a lot of it is untouched wilderness. The lake has 27 islands, and the biggest is Olkhon. During winter, the lake freezes over.
Around Olkhon, big and small ice caves are made every winter. These can be quite beautiful, and every winter many tourists come here to see them. But there are many more ice caves than the few visited by tourists. In these images, some of the less visited ice caves are captured.
