Along the S1 - Skaru to Gilgit
The Skardu District in Pakistan lies at almost 2500 meters and is known for many things. First, perhaps, that the city is an important gateway to several eight-thousand-meter-high mountains – including K2.
This area used to receive quite many tourists, but nowadays, it receives very few foreign tourists. The main reason is said to be security and the fear of groups like Taliban and others.
The road that connects Skardu with Gilgit, the infamous S1, a 167 kilometre long stretch of gravel, is considered by many to be one of the most dangerous roads in the world. That might be true due to rockfalls and other hazards. But it is also one of the most interesting roads in the world, as far as I see.
